Light Emitting Diodes, or LED lights in short, present the newest lighting source available on the market today. This latest invention has revolutionized lighting by changing how we produce light. Instead of the traditional method of generating light through heat, LEDs create light by means of a process called electroluminescence.
However, the technology behind LED has made it more pricey than most sources. In fact, in comparison with candles, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, LED light bulbs cost considerably more. But in spite of being more expensive than other lighting alternatives, the many benefits of it provide enough reasons for us to try it out especially at home.
1) Energy Saving
LED light bulbs do not need much energy in order to produce light. They create light in a process called electroluminescence instead of converting electrical energy into heat (like in the case of candles or incandescent bulbs). In short, it changes the state of an electron to cause it glow. This method eliminates, or at least considerably lessens, the quantity of energy wasted when producing light. Additionally, since the structure and volume is so much less than that of ordinary bulbs, less wattage is necessary to produce the same amount of brightness.
2) Longer Lifespan
As compared to other lighting options, LED light bulbs usually last longer from around 25,000 to 50,000 hours depending on temperature and current settings. Some LED light bulbs even take 100,000 hours before complete failure is achieved. This is because LED lighting experience minimum wear and tear unlike other lighting sources. They do not have any shortening wicks, burning filaments, or consumable vapors.
Fluorescent bulbs are reported to last only for 10,000 to 15,000 hours.
3) Smaller size
Since the mechanism behind LED depends only on the dimension of the semiconductor chip, there is no need for voluminous confinements. The smaller the chip is, the smaller the LED light created. This, however, does not necessarily translate to luminous level. It does not imply that simply because LED light bulbs are smaller, they are automatically dimmer than lights produced by other sources.
Instead, LED lighting, can sometimes be brighter than other sources of light.
4) Toughness
Because there are essentially no moving parts in LED light bulbs, they are more resilient to shocks and vibrations. Also, because their structure has eliminated the need for glass (and other fragile elements), they are usually more robust and tougher than bulbs, thereby making it the most durable source of lighting.
5) Faster switching
With regards to fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, light is produced due to superheating a medium. This is different for LED lighting. As soon as electricity flows through the chip, electroluminescence almost instantly happens. This allows LED light bulbs to be turned on and off faster than other sources of light. In fact, it can reach full brightness in a matter of microseconds.
6) No negative reactions
LED lamps do not hold Mercury vapor unlike fluorescent lamps. They are hence safer to dispose of and less toxic than regular fluorescent bulbs
